The other day I realized that it’s been over 12 years since I started my photography business. I can look back at the first images I took with my crop-censor DSLR and look at them with gratitude. Most of these images were of my 1st baby boy, Jaxon and I still cherish them to this day.
What a gift it has been to grow from that beginning stage of photography into a business of photographing YOU, your families, mentoring fellow photographers, and connecting with each and every one of you in business and in art. Whether we connected through Instagram or another platform, this space is growing into an amazing community because of you. For that I am so incredibly grateful and have a few special discounts to offer ONLY to you. The ones who have taken the extra step to subscribe and invite me into your inbox every now and then.

And now for today’s new series I’m calling Field Notes. Each month I will create a gallery, mood board, or video collage and expand on what inspired the theme. This is a creative exercise I am borrowing from an incredible artist and writer here on Substack,
.This month’s theme is inspired by my desire to travel back to Europe one day. First stop would be Paris. I’ve visited once before with my mom and sister and it is still to this day one of my most cherished memories. There is a romance and artfulness to the city that I have yet to experience anywhere else. The endless outdoor cafes, cobblestone streets, beautiful architecture and River Seine are just a few of the treasures I fell in love with on our trip.
Why red? Paris is also known as the fashion capital of the world. Where the red lip is undoubtedly synonymous with French Girl style. There is something empowering about wearing red, symbolizing romance, strength and beauty. Paris en rouge is a visual match made in heaven.
Interesting Notes on Paris & the color Red:
While Paris has been dubbed The City of Love is has also been referenced as City of Light (or “La Ville Lumière”). One theory about this nickname is, “The name comes from the 17th century and the Age of Enlightenment. Intellectuals would flock to the city to share ideas and innovations, with these intellectuals being the “lights.” The name is clearly referring to the high concentration of writers, artists and academics that have always been drawn to the city,” according to this article.
The first “Bloody Mary” was made in Paris. According to and article I read in Travel and Leisure magazine Ernest Hemingway helped name the cocktail at a hotel bar in Paris. How’s that for a Paris/Red connection?!
There is an underground city in Paris called the Catacombs where there are hundreds of miles of galleries, rooms and…graves. A bit creepy but cool!
Red is the first color babies can see after black and white.
The first red lipsticks were made over 5,000 years ago from crushed gemstones.
While most light disrupts your night vision, red light doesn’t. This is why some headlamps have a red light mode.
Please enjoy the playlist I paired with the feelings of Paris en rouge and thank you so much for reading.
Flutter On,
